about

In 1888 an expedition led by Norwegian explorer Fritjof Nansen made the first successful crossing of the Greenland icecap. The six man team voyaged from Iceland on a sealer names ‘Jason’ which dropped them off on July 17th at the edge of Greenland’s treacherous floe ice. After nearly a month in the ice, the expedition successfully made the east coast. there they proceeded to acned the icecap and strike out on to the inland ice. On October 3rd, some 78 days after leaving the ‘Jason’ and having climbed nearly 9000ft, as well as survived temperatures of -45oC, the expedition arrived at the small settlement of Godthaab not he west coast. To late in the season to catch the last ship they were forced to overwinter in Greenland, eventually being picked up seven months later. On May 21st 1889, the expedition arrived back in Norway and were greeted as returning heroes.

‘A Start On Such A Night Is Full Of Promise’ is a record that programmatically depicts the first crossing of Greenland in 1888, made by an expedition led by the Norwegian explorer Fritjof Nansen. It was written and recorded in 2010 by Tom as his final dissertation piece whilst studying music at the university of York. The music draws on the influence of both electronic and classical music, a style that has more recently come to be called ‘Modern Classical.

Initially released under the pseudonym ‘The Mountaineering Club Orchestra’, the full record was performed live only twice. Once in York by members of the university Symphony Orchestra, and once in Cambridge where it was performed by the Hills Road Chamber Orchestra in the legendary Scott Polar museum. The Scott Polar Museum is one of the world leading resources of polar exploration literature and memorabilia. The Concert was performed in its main lecture theater, literally in the shadow of some of the very items from Nansen’s expedition and featuring extended extracts read from Nansen’s account of the Greenland crossing.
